Summer Celebration with Lucya Starza

Moon Books author Lucya Starza shares her thoughts on summer and celebration….

What festivals will you be attending/celebrating over the summer?

Lucya: I’m not going to any public pagan camps this summer. I’m going away in August, but I want to spend the summer concentrating on my personal work and writing another book. I’m not quite ready to say what that is yet though. However, I will also be doing promotions in London for Pagan Portals – Poppets and Magical Dolls, which comes out this summer.

I am doing a signing event at Treadwell’s in London on July 14. It is completely free to attend so anyone who wants to is welcome to pop in and say hi. Here is the link for anyone who wants to reserve a free place in advance:

Do your rituals/celebrations change seasonally? In what way?

I like to do a private indoor ritual and an outdoor ritual if possible, but I must admit I tend to do outdoor ones more in the warmer weather!

Where do you most like to celebrate at this time of year?

Generally I prefer to celebrate the Summer Solstice in smaller groups rather than go to great big outdoor public rituals at famous sacred sites. I went to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice once. I’m glad I did it the once, but I don’t feel the need to do it again. One group I belong to celebrates all the festivals in various places in and around London. Sometimes we celebrate on the bank of the Thames, sometimes in parks and sometimes in London’s woodlands. I like to celebrate locally to where I live whenever possible.

Is there anything you find problematic about summer rituals?

What do you like most about this time of year?

The long, hot days and short nights mean you can get so much done.

Do you feel called to go bare, or wear less, or cover up in response to summer or as part of your path?

If my rite requires being skyclad, it is much nicer when the weather is warm 🙂  To be honest, I tend to be practical when it comes to outdoor rituals – wellies and a raincoat are fine if the weather calls for it.

Are you a sun worshipper?

Yes, in that I honour and revere the sun. No, in the sunbathing sense – I don’t like burning.

Are there any summer plants you particularly love?

Hollyhocks – I adore them and try to grow as many as possible in my garden.

Do you like to travel in the summer or do you prefer to stay rooted?

Both really. I do love to travel, but I also love my home city.

What’s your ideal beach body?

I often visit Sussex, which has pebbly beaches. Thicker-skinned feet might be an advantage!
