Everyday Beauty

Do you see beauty in everyday things? My friends keep inspiring me with things they post on social media, and my friend Chris popped this quote up today:

“Anyone can love a rose, but it takes a lot to love a leaf. It’s ordinary to love the beautiful, but it’s beautiful to love the ordinary.”

I don’t know who to attribute the quote to, sadly, but it got me thinking. My first reaction was, “It’s not hard to love a leaf!” but I then realised I’m probably in the minority there. Many people probably see a leaf and think, “Meh, just a leaf.” They might even think the same about a tree, or a small copse. Does it have to be a grand forest before their breath is taken away?

My boy and I were in the park with some friends yesterday, and I noticed how we constantly stopped to ogle some small treasure. One that stuck with me was the skeleton of a leaf. The delicate veins were all that was left of a once green and robust part of a large living organism. In pale gold, it looked like the finest filigree, and we pored over this amazing find for several minutes before returning to our walk. We left the leaf for others to find, in the hope that it would give someone else a few minutes wonder in their busy day.

Looking out of the window today, I noticed the rain, the grey, steely sky and the grim rooftops poking up above windswept trees. I deliberately paused and changed my perspective. I closed my eyes, and the sound of the wind in the trees was an aural tonic; a memory of the sea with waves replaced by leaves. The rain became a gift for the garden, much needed after the long drought. I marvelled at the skill in each roof tile, and how lucky we are to have such intricate shelters to return to each day. I browsed the hedgerow like a hungry person at the fridge door; rowan, hawthorn and brambles tempting my eye and tummy.

The forest will always take my breath away. I feel blessed to be as awed by a leaf, a rose, a beetle, a drop of rain and a sunny day. What everyday things do you see beauty in?
