jhp55ddc04c930d1Moon Books is always open to submissions from new Pagan writers – – follow this link for more details. However, if you are new to writing, sending in a book proposal is not actually the best way to start. We’ll assume you aren’t new to Paganism! Of course, to be an effective Pagan author you need a body of knowledge and experience – the balance of study and first-hand experience can vary dramatically, but it is depth of knowledge that counts, not the exact method by which you gained your wisdom and insight.

If you want to write, the best thing to do is to get writing and to find places you can share your work – there are many excellent Pagan magazines, ezines, and community blog sites out there. You could also start your own blog. Watch out for community anthologies – projects like Pagan Planet and Naming the Goddess, as these provide excellent opportunities for new authors to get started.

Articles and magazines give you opportunity to develop your writing skills and build confidence. By putting your work out where people can see it, you develop an audience, and it’s a lot easier to sell books when readers are already interested in your ideas. Of course there’s nothing specifically Pagan about this, it’s as true for an author in any other field as it is for Pagan writers.

It’s also a good idea to be a Pagan reader. You need to know what other people are talking about and how they’re expressing themselves. You need to know where your ideas fit into the bigger picture. Read books, magazines, blog posts – whatever works for you. There’s far more Pagan writing out there than you can hope to keep up with. Read the people who are writing the kinds of things you want to write. You may find that no-one is. If this is the case, you’ve got the exciting potential of opening up a whole new area of Paganism and the massive slog that comes with breaking into new territory.

It’s a great way to meet other readers, and writers. If you are an excellent and reliable reviewer, it can also mean that when you bring your own book to a publishing house, we already know who you are. We may already have a lot of reasons to like you and think well of you even before we’ve read your book, and that doesn’t tend to hurt.
